AK-47 • AK Discussions • Wood pistol grips - Chinese vs. Bulgarian

Newaza Member Joined :: September 2005 Post Number :: 12

User Info IM User Email User Reply Quote I am planning to put a wood pistol grip on my SAM7, and I am looking at either the blond Bulgarian wood grip from KVAR, or a darker Chinese wood grip at Gunbroker. Has anyone compared these grips side by sisde? Which is fatter? I like the looks of the Chinese grip better, but I'd probably wind up getting whichever one is a thicker/fatter grip. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ironwood sells pistol grips also. Either walnut or laminate. Don't overlook them.

The Chinese made 3 grip types.

1. skinny no checkering 2. skinny w/checkering 3. fat w/checkering

The fat ones were on the later PolyTechs.

Here is a Bulgarian wood grip from KVAR:

The Bulgarian grip is quite fat and I think it's fatter than the fat chinese grips, and it's made of a denser wood, where as the Chinese is made of a cheaper type of wood that's more likely to chip.

I would go with the Bulgarian blonde wood grip that's available from KVAR.

here's a comparison of the thickness between the Chinese and the Bulgarian. Keep in mind that the Bulgarian grip pictured had the checkering sanded off on both sides, while the chinese one is left intact, therefore the Bulgarian grip is in reality even fatter than what it looks from the picture.

You might also want to consider a Polish wood grip, because those are the same thickness as the Bulgarians but they are made of more easily stained wood, in case that you want to refinish the grip to match the rest of the furinture.

I have a Polish one on my Classic, it's really nice.

Mine came prestained and matches the laminated forend and buttstock, even though it's solid wood.

Winslow Armory is bringing in all kinds of Polish militaria now.

User Info IM User Email User Reply Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I just ordered one of the laminated polish grips from Winslow. Thanks Templar . I still plan to get the Bulgarian wood grip as well, so that I can compare the two.

I really want to shape the grip so it fits my hand perfectly. I assume it's OK to sand laminated stuff? (I have no experience with any of this).

Thanks again, guys.

You should be fine sanding the laminated grip, the wood is stabilized and shouldn't come "unglued".

Glad we could all help.

Again, thank you for all your help. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use Minwax's red mahogany, however, if you want a darker finish, like I said the Polish hard wood grip will accept stain much better. The Bulgarian wood is very hard to deal with in terms of having it accept stain, at least in my experience.

With the checkering removed...it feels well, smoother, i did it mainly because the original Russian type III AK pistol grips didn't have any checkering, plus I think it looks better without it. Just a matter of personal preference.

I would go laminate from ironwood or blond bulgy...the chinese look cheep

User Info IM User Email User Reply Quote -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We recently completed an A2 pistol grip mold to further solidify our position in the industry as a one stop shop for everything plastic for the AR-15 family of rifles. Our part number for the A2 Grip is the C9.

These grips are now available in Black (MSRP $6.00), Coyote Brown and Green (MSRP $10.00). You will be able to purchase them from all participating dealers. I imagine those who stock them will chime in shortly...

The great thing about this is it effectively reduces the cost of converting to a different color furniture set by $20.00 or so as the only grips previously available in Coyote Brown were more elaborate and retailed at a higher price.

We haven't produced tan parts in over 2 years. The coyote Brown out sold the Desert Tan in it's first 6 months of production, compared to the 3 years the Desert Tan was available. We donated all our remaining Desert Tan furniture in stock to various military units from from 2004-2005.

If a distributor wants more desert tan furniture, we can make it, but they will need to order 500 pieces.

OK- thanks. I was just asking for curiosity's sake. That, and I have some tan furniture. Will it now be "rare and collectible?"

Tan was the light color tan off of the military's Desert Combat Uniforms. Coyote Brown is a darker color we have been selling since April of 2003.

The handguard on the left and the buttstock on the right are from CavArms and they are "coyote brown".

The TangoDown Battle grip next to the Cav handguard is "Flat Dark Earth".

They are exactly the same color.

The other stocks in the pic are the older "tan", which has been discontinued by both TangoDown and VLTOR in favor of Flat Dark Earth, which is a SOCOM milspec color. In the next pic below we have three companies' products; all colors match: TangoDown and VLTOR in the new "Flat Dark Earth" and CavArms "coyote brown".

The newest SOCOM color is Ranger Green, and both VLTOR and TangoDown are switching to this color. The old green color they used before (based on the KAC green used on rail covers) is being discontinued in favor of the milspec Ranger Green.

The pistol grip on this rifle is the new Ranger Green, and the other stocks are the older green which is on the way out.

I hope CavArms follows suite and switches to Ranger Green.

We will continue to sell Olive Drab green, as first made by Armalite, then Rock River Arms. All our green parts were made to match this color. Our OEM clients prefer this color of green, and it matches the vast majority of other green parts out there.

If a distributor would like us to manufacture parts in SOCOM Ranger Green, we could do it, as long as they order a minimum of 500 pieces.
